Japanese Universities Alumni Association, Nepal (JUAAN)
The relationship between Nepali students and Japan dates back more than 120 years. Then Rana Prime Minister Dev Shumsher decided to send eight Nepali students to Japan for higher studies. Those students went to Japan in 1902 and studied in different government institutions, including, Tokyo Teikoku Daigaku, present Tokyo University.
The contribution of the Japan returned students are cultivation of Persimmon, Walnuts, Chrysanthemum and Fuji-no- Hana, the first irrigation canal of Nepal and ammunition technology and others. These items are still visible in Nepal.
Nepali students have been regularly dispatched to Japan since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Japan in 1956. Present number of Nepali students in Japan is over 20,000, according to JASSO.
JUAAN is the first Japanese Universities alumni Association in South Asia. An informal and non-registered club of Japan returned students was founded in 1963. Then a formal club was established as "Japan Students and Trainees Club" in 1973 and was registered according to the rule of the Nepal government.
The club was transformed to "Japan University Students Association, Nepal (JUSAN)" in 1996, an association of students and trainees returned from Japan. Later, JUSAN became "Japanese Universities Alumni Association, Nepal (JUAAN)", an association of only students and graduates from Japan in 2008.
In 2023, JUAAN celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first establishment. And, in recognition of its significant contributions to the development of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Nepal over the years, JUAAN was awarded the Foreign Minister's Commendation.
