With "International Liberal Arts" as its teaching philosophy, the school provides specialized knowledge, a rich culture, and a global perspective.
In the age of globalization, where multifaceted exchanges across national borders are advancing, we need to be able to recognize each other's diverse values and worldviews, work to solve various problems, and develop our own future. Under the new educational philosophy of "International Liberal Arts," Akita International University fosters human resources with practical skills who have excellent communication skills in English and other foreign languages, a rich culture, and specialized knowledge with a global perspective.
The faculty and staff aim to become another warm family for students even when they are away from their families and provide strong support for each student. For example, we have small classes of about 18 students per class, a library that never sleeps, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and IT classrooms that allow students to focus on their studies at any time. In addition, the Active Learning and Assessment Center provides language learning facilities such as speaking rooms, individualized study support by tutors to support students’ independent study, and academic career counseling for those who wish to enter graduate school.
Nurturing students' social skills and independence in an environment filled with different cultures from all over Japan and the world
Creating a cross-cultural space in a local city that can be called a "microcosm of the world," about 200 international students from roughly 200 partner universities in 50 different countries and regions around the world visit and study at Akita International University. Therefore, classes and all aspects of university life, such as after-class socialization, and club and circle activities, become a stage for cross-cultural exchange. In addition, students from almost all prefectures gather here, so in addition to cross-border, cross-cultural experiences, students can also experience a wide variety of Japanese cultures.
We also believe that dormitory life is an important part of the curriculum for international education, therefore, new students spend their first year living in the "Komachi Hall" located on the university grounds. By living together with their peers, regardless of nationality, in an environment full of different cultures from all over Japan and the world, students are able to acquire greater social skills and a deeper understanding of other cultures.
