TWCU since 1918 ―Whatever Things Are True―
Tokyo Woman's Christian University was established in 1918 as the result of dedication and hard work by a group of North American Christians along with many others in Japan and elsewhere. With Nitobe Inazo as its first president, the university quickly established itself as a premier liberal arts institution committed to higher education for women. In 2018 we celebrated the university’s centenary, building on its distinguished history with a renewed vision for the future. The university presently has 3,560 students in the School of Arts and Sciences, and over 100 students in the Graduate School. The undergraduate program consists of twelve departments organized in five divisions. The graduate program, offering both Master's and Doctoral degrees, includes the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, and the Graduate School of Science. The goal of Tokyo Woman's Christian University is to provide an exceptional liberal arts education while cultivating a vibrant Christian spirit. We are dedicated to developing the creative intellect of each student through a rigorous curriculum focused on broad knowledge that integrates different points of view. Our emphasis on the education and care of the whole individual ensures that students graduate with the intellectual and personal resources necessary to meet contemporary challenges. Today, graduates of Tokyo Woman's Christian University are highly successful in various fields and are recognized leaders in Japan and abroad.
